Wide Rivers and Seas: 1949 by Lung Ying-tai

他們曾經意氣風發、年華正茂;

戰爭的重壓,忍下了離亂的內傷;

I finished reading this book within a day.

In the morning, it was started in the bus to Hsinchu, with tears welling up almost throughout the ride.

In the afternoon, a 2.5 years old of a high school classmate held my fingers and we walked around the lake in the science park. Her generation’s life must be like heaven or gods’ realm to those “treaded on, humiliated, and hurt by the big times”, to whom this book is dedicated to.

Back in Taipei at dinner time, I cannot help flip through the whole book in desire to learn more about what had happened in those few years in the last century.

I am sure there will be a English translation/publication of this book soon. There were simply too many people whose fates were decided in those few years: the Kuomintang withdrawing to Taiwan, the “victorious” Chinese Communists, those Soviet communists plundering through the northeast China, same Russians encircled by Germans just a few years earlier, the Australian refuges of war under Japanese in Indonesia, the Taiwanese aboriginals literally kidnapped by Kuomintang army to fight in China, then for Communist Liberation Army to fight in North Korea…However, as Lung wrote: “Please look me in the eyes and honestly tell me: In a war, is there ever really a “winner”?

Though I am not sure if I am, like her, “proud to be the next generation of The Losers”. Since any tag on me is just another mechanism or prejudice of failure to a real communication; even communication is really not necessary if there’s understanding and tolerance. I (as a 3rd generation instead of her as the 2nd generation) am indeed grateful to such a book, providing a open, broad view to us – a generation taking most enjoyment in life for granted, so that we can have a more sensible view to see those things offered to us since we were born, to see those elderly in our life, and mostly to see those who passed awa y long time ago in our life — May they indeed have peace now, and suffer no more wars or any other pain in their future lives.

May those sacrificed in the name of whatever be reborn in the pure realm
