September 5 to 14
ImageFor this year’s IBA 10-day retreat, we have the great fortune to have two experienced teachers offer instructions and guidance to the participants. The topics meditators will have the opportunity to focus on and develop are Mindfulness and Compassion. These two factors are both equally crucial for the Path to Awakening, allowing genuine care, well-being and profound wisdom to flourish in the core of one’s being.

The Wing of Wisdom
Ven. Dhammadipa, will lead meditation sessions for the development of special insight (vipassana) by applying "mindfulness on the breath" (anapana-sati). The technique of using the bodily function of the breath as an anchor for one’s mindfulness was taught by the Buddha as a profound foundation for the path to wisdom, a practice which will eventually lead to the realization of the ultimate nature of all phenomena.

The Wing of Compassion
Khenpo Ngawang Jorden will emphasise on the Mahayana methods of Mind Training based on Loving Kindness and Compassion (lojong). These practices of opening the heart will result in unconditional acceptance of oneself and others in a genuinely caring way. A practitioner equipped with those means will be able to transform even unfavourable conditions into the path itself. In this way, even outer and inner obstacles will be of assistance for one’s development of compassion and wisdom.

Retreat Schedule
The retreat will commence on September 5th and conclude on September 14th. Participants are welcome to arrive on September 3rd to get acclimated. All participants are asked to attend an orientation at 4pm on September 4th. At this time the rules and format of the retreat will be explained and materials will be handed out. This schedule is designed to be both challenging and realistically doable.

Noble Silence
Noble Silence will be a part of our practice during this retreat. It will allow meditators to engage deeper in the inner process of transformation, an opportunity all too rare in our busy daily lives. There will also be times of the day allocated for free discussion, so that students can exchange themselves with each other. We also kindly ask all participants to refrain from using mobile phones, computers and music devices of any kind for the duration of the course.
Interviews and support:
Meditators will have the opportunity to see the teachers in groups and individually throughout the retreat. This will help meditators adjust their practice and face eventual difficulties skilfully. The schedule for those meetings will be provided in due time.
Caution and Disclaimer:
Meditation retreats like this one are by no means a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatments. Buddhist meditation is a means to see things as they truly are, which can lead to a direct confrontation with underlying psychological issues. People with serious mental disorders are therefore not recommended to join this retreat. Although meditation can be used very effectively to support medical treatment in such cases, this has to be done under professional supervision, an assistance we are not able to provide.

The teachers:

Ven. Dhammadipa was born in Prague/Czech Republic in 1949. He studied Chinese and Sanskrit in Prague, Paris and India, and was ordained in both the Theravada tradition of Sri Lanka and Mahāyāna tradition of Chinese Buddhism. He received extensive meditation training in the Burmese tradition of Pa-Auk Sayadaw, and is internationally renowned as a meditation teacher and scholar in the specialized theory and practice of śamatha and vipaśyanā.

Khenpo Ngawang Jorden studied the five branches of Buddhist philosophy at Sakya College in India under Khenchen Appey Rinpoche. Khenpo Jorden later taught at Sakya College before going to America to study at Harvard University where he completed his PhD in Buddhist Studies. Khenpo Jorden has retired from his teaching post at the University of Chicago and is now the Director of IBA in Kathmandu. Has has been teaching philosophy and meditation practice continuously at IBA since 2001.
