Play with Nikon P500 at Taipei Floral Expo

This was a spontaneous trip after a lunch appointment so I only had P500 with me. Otherwise I would have brought also the D7000 to play with both devices. The weather was good so even though I only read through 20% of the camera menu and was rather unaware of most of the functions, I still had a few nice shots.

The auto focus of P500 does not work all the time so I will have to learn how to use manual focus eventually.

Nikon’s VR function works quite fine though it does bother me initially to realize how much my hands shake. It was a good lesson on impermanence and deceiving perceptions, too. You think your hands are holding the camera steadily. Even after you realize your hands are shaking, when you look at your hands and the camera, it still seems that they do not move (I guess the eyes/brain compensate the shaking movement somehow). Yet when you look at the LCD screen, a magnified rose is constantly moving on the screen. That is about how our perceptions can be lying to us all the time. What you think and perceive may not at all be the truth.

The great zoom capability of P500 (36x, actually hardly needed) also makes me being able to stay lazy, i.e. sometimes I know I should walk closer to take the shot, but out of laziness, I just stayed where I was and zoomed the lens to do the job.

These four photos were taken while I remained standing in one position.

The adjacent Taipei Fine Arts Museum is hosting two good exhibitions. One on Monet which reminds me of the great time at his garden in Giverny, which is one of the few places I went for more than once and if I have a chance, I will still revisit. Another exhibition on old photos of Taiwan (Centennial Images of Taiwan) is also very interesting and worth seeing.

The 2nd photo above was taken by Canon IXUS. The tone is not as orange as P500 and overall a softer image.

The wide angle of P500 is handy in capturing outdoor scenes.

The orange kapok flowers are always something I emotionally attached to since primary school days. There was a row of kapok trees full of flowers once every year in my primary school in Taipei. Because of their weight, sometimes they would fall on the ground while remaining as a fully bloomed bud in complete shape. They are pretty yet not a flower which you would pick up, place somewhere, and try to enjoy its beauty until its last moment like a rose. I would just walk around those numerous pretty kapok flowers on the ground. Normally  you will feel sad for pretty flowers on the ground, but for them, it just seems to be where they belong to, actually inevitably for all.
